Edwin Matthews began his attachment with the natural world growing up in the woods of Northern Idaho. He studied the History of Science and Law and went on to practice law in Paris and New York, in the process becoming an environmental and social activist. In Paris, he was a founder of Friends of the Earth, now in 75 countries. More recently, he has defended the Shepaug River in Litchfield County, fought the death penalty, and represented Darfur in peace negotiations. He lives on a farm in northwestern Connecticut, where he is writing, and without much success, trying to teach his Labrador retriever to value woodchucks in the ecosystem.
